Initial situation
During a review of historical bookkeeping, missing issued invoices were identified for an earlier VAT period. The issue was more serious than a filing omission: missing sales documents can distort revenue, VAT liabilities, receivables and the continuity of the accounting records at the same time. For an owner-managed business, this type of legacy problem can also become harder to resolve as staff change and the underlying commercial context fades.
Our solution
We traced the missing documents, reconstructed the relevant invoice sequence and reviewed how the omitted transactions affected the accounting ledger and VAT reporting. The affected period was then corrected through the appropriate VAT records and return process. Rather than treating the matter as an isolated tax adjustment, we reconciled the tax correction back to the bookkeeping so that the financial records and the VAT position told the same story. The work created a clearer historical audit trail and reduced the chance that the same gap would reappear in later reconciliations.
Result
The SME restored the integrity of its historical sales ledger and corrected the related VAT reporting. Management gained a cleaner opening position for subsequent periods and a more reliable basis for financial reporting, tax compliance and any future due diligence or tax-authority review.
