Initial situation
A tax audit shifts the burden from preparing a return to proving it. The company needed to provide supporting accounting records, reconcile the filed figures to the ledger and respond to the authority in a way that was complete, consistent and easy to verify. Poorly organised evidence can turn even a correct tax position into a lengthy and disruptive process, particularly for an owner-managed company without an internal tax department.
Our solution
We prepared the audit file from the accounting records, checked the relevant return against the underlying ledger and organised the documentation requested by the authority. Questions were handled with reference to the accounting treatment and the submitted tax position, while deadlines and follow-up items were tracked centrally. The objective was not to create arguments after the fact, but to demonstrate that the return was supported by the company's books and that the relevant transactions could be traced from source document to tax reporting.
Result
The tax authority completed the audit without identifying discrepancies or making an additional tax adjustment. For the client, the measurable result was a clean audit outcome. Just as important, the exercise confirmed that the accounting records and tax-return support were sufficiently robust to withstand external scrutiny.
